Emergency preparation equipment on wooden backgroundSo many of you may be wondering what is this EDC thing I have been hearing about, well I am going to break it down for you. First the acronym EDC stands for Every Day Carry, which is exactly like it sounds, items you carry every day. Sometimes these items may be carried on your body, or in a messenger bag or backpack of some sort. Now you may be asking why and what do you carry?

Well for your average person walking around it’s the usual items wallet, keys, and phone those are pretty much the basics. But for a person who is into the EDC mindset they take it a few steps further, not only with the basic items but with an expanded list of everyday carry items. They may have an EDC list that looks more like this:

  • Wallet
  • Keys
  • Phone
  • Knife (fixed blade, folding or both)
  • Multitool (Swiss army type knife or Leatherman style tool)
  • Flashlight (main light and a backup, cause when you need it usually the batteries are dead)
  • Key ring or lanyard usually with assorted smaller tools (nail clipper, tweezers, mini flashlight, micro USB drive etc.)
  • Pen (Often times it’s all-weather and / or tactical self-defense style)
  • Notepad / journal (again often is an all-weather style)
  • Pocket or mini first-aid kit (often referred to as an IFAK, adopted from the Military term for Individaul First-Aid Kit)
  • Lastly, many EDC minded folks will carry a firearm of some sort (local laws and licenses strictly apply)

OK so you are probably wondering why a person should carry all of this gear every day. Well, EDC or Every Day Carry is a basic preparedness mindset in which a person enjoys the satisfaction of always being prepared, sort of like a mini-prepper kit that you have on your person or close by. The EDC items a person has on them may help themselves, a loved one or a total stranger in need. It may be as simple as borrowing a pen, opening a box, or as dire as breaking a car window to rescue someone or as deadly as self-defense by using the firearm.

MultitoolThese are just a few small examples of the What and Why as it relates to EDC and life, so that you can be better prepared for whatever obstacles are put in your way!!
